Students can learn to accurately and safely administer medications to healthcare facility residents. Following successful course completion and the required written state testing, graduates are listed on a central roster with the State of Texas Regulatory Services as a Certified Medication Aide (CMA). Strict admission criteria include the ability to read, write, and speak English. Students must be 18 years of age or older and free of communicable diseases. A full immunization record must be presented at registration. Students must provide an original copy or notarized photocopy of a high school diploma or GED. All program trainees also must be currently employed as a registered Texas Certified Nurse Aide in good standing while employed in a licensed Medicaid long-term care facility or trainees can be a non-licensed provider employed in a long-term care facility with at least 90 days of patient care experience. The 90 days of experience must be within the last year prior to the class. Once students have enrolled, trainees will be required to do a background check through the State of Texas Health and Human Services Commission and will be asked to complete a state application with a $25.00 money order application fee to apply for state testing and certification.
