Wisdom, Power, Control is a culturally tailored diabetes self-management education program designed for African American and multi-ethnic audiences. Adapted from the program **Sí, Yo Puedo** based on focus group feedback, **Wisdom, Power, Control** was tested during a 2011-2012 federally funded initiative. The program was found effective in improving hemoglobin A1c levels, a measure of blood glucose control over three months, as well as diabetes self-care, self-confidence, and overall diabetes knowledge.

Mireya Zapata grew up in Waco and has been married for 22 years with three children. Mireya and her sister began selling cupcakes in South Waco for fun and to make extra money during the summer. Realizing she had a real knack for it! About 17 years ago Mireya took a formal cake decorating class with instructor and mentor Douglas Woodward. From then on she was intrigued and wanted to know everything he knew. Douglas taught her the basics and always said "knowledge comes with experience," and that is still true to this day especially when it comes to decorating cakes!
